Hi Dr. Len. Thanks for all the help and advice you provide. I had a colonoscopy yesterday and as a result of the colon prep required, I have been visiting some of the colon cleansing websites. I'm wondering if colon cleansing is something to be done on a regular basis, as those websites suggest. Or, is once every 10 years enough to subject oneself to? Thanks for your thoughts!

Briaria, There are differing opinions on the whole colon cleansing protocol. I am of the belief that it can be very helpful for some people, especailly if they are struggling with some specific problems and/or at deaths door. It can be helpful to help someone who has been struggling with constipation, but the game is still in getting the colon to function properly. Remember, "as you restore function...you restore health" so if we get the colon to function better or health will improve. I don't think we need to do them on a regular basis. I am a big believer that the intestinal system is designed to run one direction and when you start to backflush water in the opposite direction you can disrupt so many things. I can't say I have done a ton of reading on this subject, but some of the biggest comments I hear from well respected people say that you can only backflush water only so far up the colon....Don't think that you are running water up the entire five feet length of the colon...secondly, all that water washes out a lot of the bacteria, both good and bad, that is supposed to be there. I encourage my pateints who have trouble with constipation or to clean it out...we are supposed to eat lots of raw and or fiber rich foods. You can also add magnesium to help draw water into the colon which helps ease everything OUT. I like adding ground up flax seed, apple pectin, guar gum....to help add fiber when we don't eat enough. I know I do pass out a lot of fiber powders to my patients. I even use things like cascara segrada and senna, BUT for only a month or two. DO NOT use them longer than that or to stay regular. Our diet is what should keep us regular. Hope that helps, Dr. Len
